ANVIL Kids Privacy Policy
How we protect your child's data and your family's privacy
Effective: April 20261. Introduction
ANVIL Kids ("we," "us," or "our") is a quest-based educational platform designed for children ages 5 through 17. We are committed to protecting the privacy and safety of all our users, especially children. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights and choices available to parents and guardians.
ANVIL Kids is operated by ANVIL. This policy applies specifically to the ANVIL Kids product and all services accessible at /kids/ on our domain.
2. COPPA Compliance
ANVIL Kids fully complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without verified parental consent.
Parental Consent for Under-13 Users
Before a child under 13 can activate an account, a parent or guardian must complete email verification. The parent will receive a verification email with a unique confirmation link. The child's account will not be activated until the parent confirms consent by clicking this link. No data beyond the display name and age group selection is stored prior to verification.
3. Information We Collect
We collect only the minimum data necessary to provide a functional, safe educational experience:
Account Information
- Display name — a chosen alias (not required to be a real name)
- Age group — selected tier (ages 5-8, 9-12, or 13-17) to deliver age-appropriate content
- Birth year (optional) — used only for age-group verification
- Parent/guardian email — for consent verification and account management (under-13 accounts only)
Learning Progress
- Quest completion status — which quests and levels have been finished
- XP (experience points) — earned through completing activities
- Level and rank — current progression tier
- Streak data — consecutive days of activity
Student Artifacts
- Text content created by the student — responses, projects, and written work produced during quests
Accessibility Preferences

- High contrast mode preference
4. Information We Do NOT Collect
ANVIL Kids is designed with a strict data-minimization philosophy. We do not collect:
5. How We Use Collected Data
All collected data is used exclusively for educational purposes:
- Educational progress tracking — displaying quest completion, XP earned, and current level
- Age-appropriate content delivery — ensuring each child sees material suited to their age group
- Portfolio display — showing completed artifacts and achievements within the child's account
- Accessibility — applying the child's chosen font size and contrast preferences
- Account management — enabling parents to monitor and manage their child's experience
6. No Advertising, No Profiling, No Third-Party Analytics
Our Commitment
ANVIL Kids contains zero advertising. We do not serve ads, display sponsored content, or engage in any form of behavioral profiling. We do not use third-party analytics services (such as Google Analytics) on any ANVIL Kids pages. We do not build interest profiles or target children with marketing of any kind.
7. Data Storage and Security
All ANVIL Kids data is stored locally on our servers. We do not share, sell, rent, or transfer any child data to third parties for any purpose. Data is protected using industry-standard security practices including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls.
localStorage Usage
ANVIL Kids uses your browser's localStorage (device-local storage) to save the following preferences. This data never leaves the device:
- Font size preference — stored locally so text size persists between visits
- High contrast mode — stored locally to remember accessibility settings
- Streak data — stored locally to track consecutive activity days on the device
localStorage data is controlled entirely by the browser and can be cleared at any time through browser settings. It is never transmitted to our servers.
8. Social Features and Leaderboard
ANVIL Kids does not include social networking features such as chat, messaging, friend lists, or public profiles. The leaderboard feature, if enabled, displays only the child's opt-in display alias and XP score. No personally identifiable information (PII) is ever exposed through any social or competitive feature.
9. Portfolio Sharing
Parents may opt in to allow their child's completed project portfolio to be viewable. Portfolio sharing is:
- Opt-in only — disabled by default
- Parent-controlled — only a parent or guardian can enable or disable sharing
- Revocable at any time — parents can turn off sharing instantly from the parent dashboard
Shared portfolios display only the child's chosen display name and their completed work. No age, location, or other identifying information is included.
10. Parental Rights
Parents and guardians have the following rights regarding their child's data:
- Access — view all data associated with your child's account from the parent dashboard
- Review — review all artifacts, progress, and activity your child has completed
- Correct — update or correct any information such as display name or age group
- Delete — request complete deletion of your child's account and all associated data
- Export — request a copy of all data associated with your child's account
- Revoke consent — withdraw consent at any time, which will deactivate the child's account
All parental controls are accessible from the Parent Dashboard. For additional data requests, please contact us using the information below.
11. Data Retention
- Active accounts — data is retained for as long as the account remains active
- Parent-requested deletion — all child data is permanently deleted upon parent request
- Inactive accounts — accounts with no activity for 12 consecutive months are automatically purged along with all associated data
When data is deleted, it is permanently removed from our servers. There is no recovery after deletion.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. If we make material changes that affect how we handle children's data, we will notify parents via the email address on file and display a prominent notice on the ANVIL Kids site.
